How the Amish make their great furniture.

( And how they create those handy kits for doing it yourself. )

The traditional Amish carvers and cabinet makers of Wisconsin build furniture the slow and careful way.  They begin by selecting trees that grow wild and slightly crooked in the tangled woodlots of Wisconsin.  Our most experienced crafstmen select lumber cut from naturally bent tree trunks and limbs.  This is how they get the fascinating grain patterns and picturesque knots that provide so much charm and character.  Of course, straight grained lumber with excellent dimensional integrity is used for drawer sides and other parts of the furniture where strength and fit are required.

After the right logs are found, carvers prepare them for use in bedframes, in tables, and as corner trim for the chests and dressers.  Amish artisans peel some of the bark from the logs, while leaving enough to create a gorgeous red, brown, and tan mottled surface.  Then the carpenters and cabinet makers cut and assemble real planks to make the sides and tops.  But they don't stop there; they make the backs just as strong and beautiful as the fronts and sides!  You will be astonished at this difference in quality from factory built furniture pieces which almost always have only cheap cardboard, particle board, or thin plywood backs.

To protect the furniture, clear finishes are applied after sanding. All the unique knots, cracks, and crevices are retained for their beauty and character.  The massive logs of the bed are smooth to the touch, but retain their rough-hewn outdoor charm.  Look at the closeup views in the photographs, especially the cropped-off pictures.  Even our slightly fuzzy photos taken by amateurs under poor lighting conditions reveal the stunning grace and heft of the logs.

Never again settle for thin wood veneers and particle board!

Avoid factory made look-alike "log furniture", since it has very little long term heirloom or antique value, and less short term beauty!  You can spot such replicas by the perfectly straight edges made by machines.  And if it looks like a plumber made it from tan colored plastic tubing, it might be made from machine-cut western lodgepole pine.  There are factories that offer "log furniture" located all around the United States, but unless they guarantee that no two of their products are alike, their furniture is neither unique nor hand-made.

We guarantee that every one of our traditional and rustic log or wooden furniture pieces is unique and made by hand!
